Community Relations
Born and bred in the Tees Valley, Chief Executive Chey Garland believes passionately that companies have a responsibility to the communities they work in. Through her work with One North East - and in collaboration with local business leaders - Chey has sought to identify opportunities for private enterprises to collaborate with public sector and educational ‘stakeholders’ to open up opportunities for communities facing special challenges.
Garlands’ Touch programme exemplifies Chey’s commitment to the local community. A holistic people development programme, Touch gives Garlands’ employees the opportunity to improve skills such as listening, public speaking, presentation and mentoring through innovative activities such as doing numeracy mentoring in local schools to supporting drug/alcohol abuse or domestic violence groups in the community. Garlands’ employees taking part in Touch have brought valuable learning back to the workplace.
